Couples Therapy in Southern Africa

Come and hear about what life is like in Southern Africa. Interviews include a South African domestic worker who lived through Apartheid, an educated Zimbawean man who had to leave in order to find work in another country due to the economic insecurity back home; and a lady studying to be a Witchdoctor speaking about being a Healer to her community. 3 therapists from Southern Africa will discuss the implications for Couples Therapy with Southern African people. Peter Muhwati

Peter is a Clinical Social Worker from Zimbabwe living in Johannesburg, South Africa. He uses attachment-based, experiential approaches to therapy with individuals and couples. His clinical experience also includes work within palliative care in Zimbabwe. Peter has advanced training in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and is completing Essential Skills 1 in Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP). He completed his higher education at Penn State University and Royal Holloway, University of London. Following his undergraduate degree, he entered the religious life of the Franciscan Friars. He is still guided by Franciscan Spirituality. Peter is married with two children.

Lucinda Johns

Dr Lucinda Johns is a registered Counselling Psychology in private practice in Durban, South Africa. She has a special interest in trauma, diversity, illness narratives, autoethnography and couples’ therapy. Lucinda regularly attends Emotionally-Focused Therapy supervision as this provides her with the opportunity for professional growth and skills development. She has shared her personal experience as a woman of colour in the EFT supervision group and described it as a reflective experience. In addition, her breast cancer journey has played a pivotal role in both her personal and professional life. Before her private practice, she worked as a lecturer at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. She also lectured part-time at Varsity College and South African College of Applied Psychology. In addition, she supervised intern psychologists at the Durban University of Technology. She earned her PhD at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
